OrderPaperToday – A retreat organised by the Senate and House Adhoc Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution is currently holding at a tent within the premises of Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
The event kicked off on Friday at 10:00 am, with opening remarks by Chairman of the House of Representatives Constitution Amendment Committee, Idris Wase, who noted that 26 bills were referred to it for consideration.
According to Wase; “The general public responded overwhelmingly and a total of One Hundred and Seventy Eight (178) memoranda with One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Eighty (1,980) specific recommendations were received.”
“During this first batch of the review exercise, the Committee in the House of Representatives considered sixty-two (62) Bills out of which twenty-six (26) Bills were recommended for harmonisation with the Senate.
Of the 62 bills, eight (8) bills were rejected, twenty-five (25) Bills were retained with modifications and the consideration of 3 bills were deferred.”
Members of the press were however asked to leave the venue, implying that journalists are barred from participating or covering the technical session.
OrderPaper is yet to ascertain the reason for moving the retreat outside the NASS premises, especially as it will help to cut cost..
