OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives Committee on Army has pledged to investigate allegations of human right abuses against military personnel fighting boko haram terrorism in the north-east part of the country.

Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Rimamnde Shawulu (Taraba-PDP) disclosed this on Tuesday at the Committee’s inaugural meeting at the national assembly.

Shawulu said one challenge the Army is going through now is the relentless campaign by external bodies and organizations accusing it of war crimes in the war against terrorists and that his committee will begin investigation into the matter.

“In no distant future, the committee will look into those claims, engage stakeholders and ensure that our men and women in uniform who are laying their lives for our security are not victimized or scandalized,’’ he said.

He further stressed the commitment of the committee to cooperate with the Army to enable it meet up with its challenges.

“We understand that warfare has changed and threats too, have changes. We will work with the military to modernize itself, increase its strength in terms of manpower and equipment,’’ he noted.

The lawmaker who pointed out the need for educated soldiers as core of the modern army, assured that the committee would ensure that Army training institutions are properly rehabilitated and modernized.

“Research and development will also be encouraged and we will work to ensure the successful building of a modern Nigerian Army that is the pride of all Nigerians,’’ he added.
