Karimi said the decision to purchase the luxury vehicles was based on the condition of Nigerian roads and durability.

Despite the economic difficulties in Nigeria and the criticism from the public, the lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Karimi Sunday, has defended the ongoing procurement of luxury cars by the management of the National Assembly for lawmakers.

Briefing journalists at the National Assembly on Tuesday, Karimi said that the leadership of both chambers of the National Assembly decided to buy the luxury cars for lawmakers because they want vehicles that would be reliable on Nigerian roads but also be easy to maintain for a period of four years (10th Assembly).

Karimi, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Services said“It was based on a comparative analysis of the cost of technical issues and durability on Nigeria roads; We want something that we can maintain for another four years.

“And the issue of buying vehicles for the National Assembly, you know it is a recurring issue, it occurs every assembly, it will always come up.”

On the issue of cost, he said, “The decision that we took was done by the procurement department and they did a comparative analysis on getting a land cruiser for lawmakers, so it is not our decision alone.

“It was based on comparative analysis of cost and durability due to Nigerian roads, In the state assembly and even local government for their Chairmen, they buy cars waiting for them too.”

Karimi, however, urged Nigerians to have a little trust in the lawmakers as it is an existing law in every Assembly.
