For the 2023 National Assembly elections in the North Central State of Nasarawa, residents of the State are constitutionally empowered to send eight representatives to the National Assembly. These representatives comprise three Senators and eight members of the House of Representatives.

Between the eight lawmakers elected to both chambers of the federal parliament in 2019, they have sponsored a cumulative total of 25 bills which can largely be described as a below-average performance.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES SCORECARD

Rep. Gaza Jonathan Gbefwi
In the House of Representatives, the lawmaker representing Karu/Keffi/Kokona Federal Constituency, Gaza Jonathan Gbefwi sponsored eight bills between 2019 and 2022; the highest by any legislator from the State in the 9th National Assembly.

Rep. Abdulmumin Mohammed Ari
Representing Nassarawa/Toto Federal Constituency, the lawmaker has so far sponsored four bills in his kitty.

Rep. Abubakar Hassan Nalaraba
The lawmaker representing Awe/ Keana/Doma Federal Constituency has two bills to his credit.

Rep. Abubakar Usman
Representing Akwanga/Wamba/Nassarawa Eggon Federal Constituency has sponsored one bill in the period under review.

SENATE SCORECARD

Umaru Tanko Al-Makura

In the Senate, a former governor of the state, Senator Al-Makura, is leading the fray with six bills, among which is a bill seeking to provide a legal framework for the Federal University Lafia Teaching Hospital, which has already been passed.

Representing Nasarawa South, he ran for the National Chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2022 but eventually stepped down on the eve of the party’s convention for his kinsman and Senator-colleague who emerged as the party’s helmsman.

Godiya Akwashiki

Representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District, the legislator in the period under review has three bills to his name, including the bill to establish a Federal College of Medical Sciences, Nasarawa Eggon, which is currently at the Committee Stage.

A former deputy speaker of the Nassarawa State House of Assembly, the Senator, ditched the All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure the Senatorial ticket of the Social Democratic Party over alleged injustice in the party primaries. He, however, lost the ticket to Danladi Envuluanzu, a former Executive Secretary of the National Judicial Council.

Abdullahi Adamu

Governor of the State between 1999 and 2007, the three-time lawmaker has no bill to his credit since his election as the lawmaker representing Nassarawa West Senatorial District in 2019

This can perhaps be traced to his exit from the Red Chamber in 2022 following his election as APC National Chairman and his eventual resignation to focus on the task of preparing the governing party possible victory during the 2023 general election.
