10TH NASS REPORT CARD: South-west Reps sponsor 238 bills in first year

South-west lawmakers in the 10th House of Representatives have introduced a total of 238 bills during their first year in office.

In their first year in office, representatives from the south-west geopolitical zone made notable strides in their legislative responsibilities by sponsoring 238 bills, which accounts for 20.3 percent of all bills in the house. Among these bills, 12 were passed/transmitted for concurrence, 1 was consolidated, 2 were adjourned at debate, 8 are awaiting consideration, 15 are awaiting report and 200 are awaiting second reading.  

Of the 71 lawmakers from the south-west zone, 49 sponsored bills, while 22 did not engage in bill sponsorship. Additionally, the zone is represented by only 2 female lawmakers, highlighting the need for greater attention to gender balance and equal representation within the south west states.

These female lawmakers are Rep. Kafilat Ogbara (APC) Kosofe Federal Constituency, Lagos state, and Rep. Adewunmi Onanuga (APC) Ikenne/Sagamu Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun state who is also serving as the deputy whip of the house. She is the only principal officer from the south-west and sponsored 6 bills during the period in review. 

Here is a further breakdown of the activities of the south-west zone per state. 

Ekiti 

4 out of Ekiti lawmakers sponsored a total of 13 bills. 7 of these bills are awaiting second reading, 3 are awaiting report, 2 are awaiting consideration and 1 was adjourned as debate. The bills constitutes 5.5 percent of the zonal bills and 1.12 percent of the total house bills. 

Lagos

Only 17 of Lagos lawmakers sponsored bills within the first year and they had a total of 127 bills between them. 111 of these bills are awaiting second reading,  5 are awaiting report, 3 are awaiting consideration, 1 was consolidated and 7 were passed/transmitted. These bills represent 53.4 percent of the zonal bills tally and 11 percent of the total house bills tally. 

Ogun

Ogun had a total of 27 bills sponsored by 8 of its lawmakers. The bill progression is as follows: 1 bill was passed/transmitted, 1 was adjourned at debate, 1 bill is awaiting consideration, 3 bills are awaiting report, and 21 bills are awaiting second reading. The bills account for 11.3 percent of the zonal bills tally and 2.3 percent of the total house bills. 

Ondo

Ondo had 15 sponsored bills by 6 lawmakers. Of this number, 2 are awaiting report while 13 are awaiting second reading. These bills make up 6.3 percent of the south west zone bills tally and 1.3 percent of the total house bills. 

Osun

Osun has 7 sponsors who proposed 40 bills.  Out of these 40 bills, 1 were passed/transmitted, 2 are awaiting report, and 36 are awaiting second reading. The bills constitutes 16.8 percent of the zonal bills and 3.41 percent of the total house bills. 

Oyo

There were 7 bill sponsors in Oyo who sponsored 16 bills in total. 3 of these bills were passed/transmitted, 12 are awaiting second reading, and 1 is awaiting consideration. These bills represents 6.7 percent of the south west bills tally and 1.36 percent of the total house bills.
