  • Senate silences Ireti over clash with Wike

During the days plenary, on the second order of the day was a report from the Committee on FCT on the 98.5bn FCT Supplementary Appropriation Bill.

However, opposing the consideration of this report, embattled Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT) raised a point of order coming under order 10 and 11. She lamented that as the only FCT Senator, she was never informed of the supplementary bill and that committee members never involved her in the process. 

While speaking, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio immediately ruled her out of order for coming under a wrong order, depriving her of the opportunity to air her views. According to him, the order she moved demanded that she present a motion to the House. He thereafter asked her to present the motion tomorrow. 

The Senate immediately resolved into the committee on supply to consider the clauses of the bill and immediately passed it.

The passage of this bill clearly means that Ireti’s motion might no longer be taken as the House has also embarked on a recess.

The Senate passed the sum of N1.911 trillion as the 2024 statutory budget for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

This followed the consideration of a report from the Committee on NDDC during plenary.

Earlier on Monday, the NDDC led by its Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, had appeared before the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs  to defend the  N1.911trillion 2024 budget proposal.

Presenting the estimates of the fiscal document Ogbuku said the Budget was prepared to prioritise improvement in security, job creation, youth and women empowerment, social welfare, education and  infrastructure, among others.

  • SEDC (Establishment) Bill gets Senate approval

The Senate has passed the South East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill.

The passage of the House Bill, followed a report from the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters chaired by Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North).

Presenting the report, Monguno explained that there was only one difference in the bills passed by both chambers

That of the senate states that the members of the South-East Development Commission should be subjected to approval of the senate.

“The house says members should be confirmed by the members of the house, but the senate version was adopted.”

  • Adjournment for recess

The Senate has adjourned its plenary session and gone on recess to resume on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio said the recess was to enable Senators participate in the 2024 Democracy Day activities which is slated for June 12 as well as to mark their one year in office, having been inaugurated on June 13, 2023.
