Meet members of the 10th National Assembly from Bayelsa State

Eight lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly are from Bayelsa State – three in the Senate and five in the House of Representatives. This article by Catherine Onyeka tells you about them and the constituencies they represent.

Bayelsa is a state in the South-South region of Nigeria, located in the core of the Niger Delta. It was created in 1996 from Rivers State. It shares a boundary with Rivers State to the east and Delta State to the north across the Niger River for 17 km and the Forçados River for 198 km, with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean dominating its southern borders.

Bayelsa state capital is Yenagoa while the state comprises eight local government areas which are: Ekeremor, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Yenagoa, Nembe, Ogbia, Sagbama, Brass and Southern Ijaw. The state is the smallest in Nigeria by population as of the 2006 census. Being in the Niger Delta, Bayelsa State has a riverine and estuarine setting. The languages of the Ijaw are widely spoken in Bayelsa State, along with Isoko and Urhobo. The state is the primary home for the Ijaws, their ancestral home. The state is also the ancestral home of the Urhobo people in the Sagbama local government area.

As a state in the oil-rich Niger Delta, Bayelsa State’s economy is dominated by the petroleum industry. The state is the site of Oloibiri Oilfield, where oil was first discovered in Nigeria, and as of 2015 was estimated to produce 30-40% of the country’s oil. The state has the largest gas reservoir (18 trillion cubic feet) in Nigeria.

It is currently governed by Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who emerged as governor in 2020 to date.

The 62-year-old lawmaker is a first-term senator representing Bayelsa Central senatorial district in the 10th Assembly under the PDP. Senator Henry Seriake Dickson 

Sen. Dickson, a 58-year-old  lawmaker is a second-term senator representing Bayelsa West senatorial district in the 10th Assembly under the PDP. he was governor of Bayelsa from February 2012 to 14 February 2020. The lawmaker began his legislative journey from 2007 to 2012 as a Member representing Sagbama-Ekeremor Federal Constituency and served as Chairman, the Committee on Justice and member of several committees including Defence, National Security, Intelligence and Foreign Affairs. Rep. Enenimiete is a first-term Member, representing Brass/Nembe Federal Constituency in the 10th Assembly under the PDP. Rep. Agbedi Frederick Yeitiemone 

Rep Yeitiemone is Member, representing the Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency in the 10th Assembly under the PDP. The lawmaker began his legislative journey in 1998 when he contested for Bayelsa West Senatorial District under the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) but lost at his party’s primary. In 2002, he contested in the PDP primary election for a ticket to run for Bayelsa West Senatorial District but lost.

The lawmaker was first elected in the 3rd Assembly in the Third Republic in 1992 representing Ekeremor Federal Constituency then of Rivers State and was a member of house committees on Public Accounts and Sports and Youth Development.
