Windstorm: Reps urge NEMA, NEDC to provide relief materials

NEMA should intervene as windstorm destroys many schools, houses, farms lands, places of religious worship, businesses and market places in Adamawa.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday urged the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assess the level of damage caused by a windstorm and urgently provide relief material to the people of Adamawa State affected.

The lawmakers also directed the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) to provide aid to the communities affected by the Windstorm by providing them with building materials, food items and business startups.

These resolutions followed a motion of urgent importance moved by Rep. James Shuaibu Barka (PDP Adamawa) during Wednesday’s plenary.

In his debate, Rep. Barka noted that on Sunday May 10, 2024, a heavy windstorm in Pella, Mijili, Garari, Wuro Garba, Barkari, Jabba, Lugga and Mombol Communities of Hong LGA, Adamawa state destroyed many schools, houses, farms lands , places of religious worship, businesses and market places.

He expressed that as a result of the disaster, many of the inhabitants of these communities’ have been displaced, homes, businesses and properties worth millions of naira were lost.

Further worried that this unfortunate incident caused undue hardship, emotional and psychological trauma to the good people of these communities who are predominantly peasant farmers and petty traders that depend on farming and small scale business for survival.

Adopting the motion the House mandate the committees on Humanitarian Affairs, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) to ensure compliance.
