Eleven lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly are from Cross River State – three in the Senate and eight in the House of Representatives. This article by Oluwafunke Ajayi tells you about them and their constituencies.

Cross River, a state in the south-south part of Nigeria, has Calabar as the capital. Nicknamed as ‘The people’s Paradise’. The state was known originally as South-Eastern State before being renamed in 1976. 

Cross River derived its name from the Cross River, which passes through the state and comprises eighteen (18) Local Government Areas. It has three senatorial districts and eight federal constituencies.

It is currently governed by Bassey Otu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who served as a Member representing Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Constituency of the State (2003-2011) and Senator of Cross River South (2011-2015).

Senator Ekpenyong Asuquo

The lawmaker is currently serving his first term as Senator representing Cross River South Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly under the platform of the APC. Ekpenyong worked as a lecturer in the Banking and Finance Department of the University of Calabar for two years. In December 2015 he was appointed State Commissioner for Finance by Governor Benedict Ayade at the age of 29, making him one of the youngest commissioners in Nigeria and the longest-serving commissioner for Finance in the State. Rep. Abang Victor Bisong

Rep. Abang Victor Bisong

Rep. Abang hails from Bawup, Boki Local Government Area, of Cross River State, born on April 11th 1967. He is currently serving his first term as a member representing the Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency in the 10th House of Representatives, elected under the platform of the PDP. He joined politics in 2005 when he was appointed as the Chief Legislative Aide to the then Senate President, Ken Nnamani (2005 to 2007). He subsequently held the position of Special Assistant to the Senate President on Public Affairs (2007 to 2016) and Chief of Staff to the Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Chairman (2016 to 2019).
