The workshop designed for members of the National Assembly aims to address aspects of financial prudence, debt management, and fiscal reforms essential to alleviating current economic hardships.

OrderPaper Advocacy Initiative, Nigeria’s foremost independent parliamentary monitoring organisation and policy think tank that bridges the gap between people and parliament, is set to host a capacity-strengthening workshop on fiscal responsibility and public finance management.

The crucial capacity-strengthening workshop designed for members of the National Assembly aims to address aspects of financial prudence, debt management, and fiscal reforms essential to alleviating current economic hardships and sustainable development of the nation.

A key expected outcome of the workshop is to galvanise efforts for urgent fiscal reforms and strengthen the capacity of legislators for effective oversight of Nigeria’s Public Finance Management and report the same for public enlightenment. The conversations will focus on the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA), 2007, with the resource persons expected to highlight the need and areas of amendment of the law.

OrderPaper is organising this high-level workshop under the auspices of the Growth Initiatives for Fiscal Transparency (GIFT) project in collaboration with the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) and with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under its Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement (SCALE) project.

Speaking about the event, Mr. Oke Epia, Founder and Executive Director, OrderPaper Nigeria, revealed that the event is timely and needed for the country to experience fiscal reforms in these challenging times.

“As Nigeria navigates the dynamic landscape of governance under the nascent President Bola Tinubu administration and the new 10th National Assembly, we have offered this unique workshop as our quota to solving the challenges bedevilling the nation.

“We all know that Nigeria is currently facing some economic challenges that cannot be separated from the choices we have made on fiscal responsibility and management of public finance. We cannot expect a solution or change while doing or changing nothing.

“There is the need for urgent fiscal reforms and strengthening the capacity of legislators for effective oversight of Nigeria’s Public Finance Management so we can address issues of financial prudence and debt management which are essential to alleviating current economic hardships and sustainable development of the nation.

“This event reflects our commitment to fostering informed and productive discourse around the legislature and shaping evidence-based policies for the benefit of citizens whether individual or corporate.

“The workshop and deeply insightful perspectives in store at the event will benefit all stakeholders of the democratic project, including policymakers, business leaders, development partners, civil society leaders, and citizens alike.”

The event is slated for Monday 26th February 2024 at Fraser Suites, Abuja by 1: 00 pm prompt.

Expected guests at the event include Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives; Distinguished Sen. Sani Musa, Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance; Rt. Hon. James Faleke, Chairman, House Committee on Finance; and Victor Muruako Esq, Executive Chairman, Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC). Professor Uche Uwaleke, Director, Institute of Capital Market Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi and Charles Abana Esq.
