Irepodun: “Ancestral homes, graves are being wiped away” – Reps to FG

The motion sponsor lamented that stalls in the markets were submerged by flood, while expressing sadness over the effect of flooding on four communities in Irepodun/Orolu/Olorunda and Osogbo Federal Constituency of Osun State.

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Ministries of Environment, Works and Housing and other relevant Ministries, Department, and Agencies (MDAs) to release funds for dredging of blocked canals and other hydraulic structures in Irepodun and Osogbo Federal Constituency of Osun State.

The call followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Adewale Morufu Adebayo, who expressed sadness over the effect of flooding on four communities in Irepodun/Orolu/Olorunda and Osogbo Federal Constituency of Osun State.

Adebayo said the communities have remained prone to rain disaster threats on an annual basis for the past fifteen years, adding that the incessant heavy rainfall is gradually washing away private and public buildings resulting in the loss of property worth millions of naira.

According to the lawmaker, flood disaster has placed people affected by it through dire straits, adding that commercial activities are grounded to a halt. as stalls in the markets were submerged, and goods and property washed away, while ancestral homes and graves were wiped away in the affected communities.

The development, he said has necessitated intervention by the Federal Government to proffer lasting solution to avert further loss of lives and property.

In adopting the motion, the House called on the Federal Ministries of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, as well as the National Emergency Management Agency to provide urgent assistance to the affected communities.

It also urged that the Federal Ministries of Environment, Works and Housing and other relevant Ministries, Department, and Agencies (MDAs) release funds for dredging of blocked canals and other hydraulic structures, as well as the Ecological Fund Office, to take practical measures to forestall future occurrence.

Furthermore, the House mandated its Committees on Environment, Works, Housing, Emergency, and Disaster Preparedness (when constituted) to ascertain the level of damage in the affected areas and liaise with relevant Ministries, Department, and Agencies to make provisions in the 2024 budget estimates for the construction of water drainage, and erosion control measures to put an end to the double environmental challenges and address the issue on an annual basis to avoid reoccurrence of flooding.
