President Tinubu appoints ex-Jigawa Senator as NASS Aide

A septuagenarian, Gumel had previously served as Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters between 2009 and 2011 and as Special Adviser to the National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) on National Assembly Matters from 2012 to 2014.

 

 

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed a member of the Eighth Senate, Senator Abdullahi Abubakar Gumel, and Honourable Ibrahim Olarewaju Kunle; a member of the Ninth House of Representatives, as Presidential aides on National Assembly Matters.

According to a statement by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation released late Monday, Senator Gumel will serve as Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters (Senate), while Hon. Olarewaju will serve as Senior Special Assistant, National Assembly Matters  (House of Representatives).

Gumel was first elected to the federal parliament in 1999 as the Member representing Gumel/Maitagri/SuleTanrarkar/Gagarawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, where he chaired the House Committee on Special Duties (1999–2000) and House Committee on Police Affairs (2001–2003). He will later serve between 2003 and 2007 as Special Adviser to the Fifth House of Representatives Speaker, Aminu Bello Masari.

A septuagenarian, he served as Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters between 2009 and 2011 and as Special Adviser to the National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) on National Assembly Matters from 2012 to 2014.

He thereafter ran for the Jigawa State North West Senatorial seat under the platform of All Progressives Congress in 2015; an election he won and represented the District in the 8th Senate, where he also chaired the Senate Committee on States and Local Government.

Senator

 

Honourable Olarewaju; the newly appointed Presidential Media aide on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives), is the immediate past Member of the House of Representatives representing Ido/Osi/Moba/Ilejemeje Federal Constituency of Ekiti State.

As a member of the Ekiti State delegation of federal lawmakers in the Ninth National Assembly, he ranked second among the nine Members of the Assembly from the state in terms of Bills Tally; sponsoring 23 bills between June 2019 and June 2023. He sought re-election under the platform of his party; the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost the Ekiti North Federal Constituency 2 primary to businessman, Akinlayo Kolawole.

The Presidency in the Monday announcement appointing the duo of Gumel and Olarewaju as Presidential Aides, announced a deluge of other appointments, including Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as National Security Adviser (NSA), Hadiza Bala Usman and Hannatu Musa Musawa as Special Adviser on Policy Coordination as well as Culture and Entertainment Economy respectively.

President Tinubu also approved the immediate retirement of all Service Chiefs and the Inspector-General of  Police, Advisers, as well as Comptroller-General of Customs from Service and named their replacements with immediate effect pending their screening and approval by the National Assembly.

The newly appointed Service Chiefs are Maj. Gen. C.G Musa (Chief of Defence Staff), Maj. Gen. T. A Lagbaja (Chief of Army Staff), Rear Admiral E. A Ogalla (Chief of Naval Staff), and AVM H.B Abubakar (Chief of Air Staff). Others are DIG Kayode Egbetokun  (Acting Inspector-General of Police), Maj. Gen. EPA Undiandeye (Chief of Defence Intelligence) and Adeniyi Bashir Adewale as the Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
