In this edition of our National Assembly Appraisal series, we present the Performance Scorecard of federal lawmakers from Gombe in the Ninth House of Representatives and Senate, respectively. The Appraisals highlight Bills Sponsorship by the lawmakers between 2019 and 2022.

Gombe State in the North East has a total of nine lawmakers in the National Assembly, comprising six members of the House of Representatives and three Senators, with seventy-four bills between the legislators.

 

 

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES SCORECARD

The lawmaker representing Kaltungo/Shongom Federal Constituency, Rep. Simon Karu Elisha, is currently the high flier among federal legislators from the State having sponsored 23 bills since he was elected to parliament in 2019.

He is closely followed by Rep. Yaya Tango Bauchi, representing Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency with 12 bills to his name.

The Chairperson of the House Committee on Electoral Matters and only female federal lawmaker from the State, Rep. Aishatu Jibril Dukku representing Dukku/Nafada Federal Constituency, is the only other lawmaker from the State who comes closest, with 10 bills to her credit over the last three years.

Rep. Mela Victor Danzaria representing Balanga/Billiri Federal Constituency, and Rep Abubakar Yunusa Ahmad, representing Yamaltu/Deba Federal Constituency, have each sponsored seven bills. For Rep. Usman Bello Kumo representing Akko Federal Constituency, he sponsored six bills in the period under review.

SENATE SCORECARD

 

In the Red Chamber, Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central) leads the chart with four bills, including a Bill seeking to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Deba, which has already been passed.

The two-time former Governor and former Minister of State for Power has been in the legislative chamber since 2011, where he appears to have cemented himself as a force to reckon with in parliamentary politics.

He is closely followed by Senator Saidu Ahmed Alkali (Gombe North) with three bills in his kitty, while Senator Bulus Amos Kilawangs (Gombe South), has two bills to his name.

FUN FACTS

  • All federal lawmakers from Gombe State are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
  • Gombe is one of the few states where all of its National Assembly members have at least two bills to their name since the inauguration of the Ninth Assembly.
