*Buhari, IBB, GEJ, Gowon, Other former Rulers to Get N2.3bn
OrderPaperToday – The 2016 budget undergoing consideration by the National Assembly has a provision of N60 billion for constituency intervention projects for Senators and members of the House of Representatives.
Another provision of N2.3 billion has been set aside for payment of entitlements of former presidents/heads of state and vice presidents/chief of general staff.
This means that the likes of President Muhammadu Buhari will also benefit from this fund having served as military Head of State in the past.
Constituency projects by members of the national assembly has always been a contentious issue of public debate as most citizens regard the money as slush funds for lawmakers even though it is supposed to be used to aid the infrastructural development of their constituencies.
Findings by ORDERPAPER.NG showed that Constituency intervention projects gulped the sum of N50billion in the 2015 budget.
If the figure of N60billion is approved by the lawmakers, it would be N10billion higher than what was approved for last year.
Meanwhile, former military rulers like Ibrahim Babangida, Yakubu Gowon, Olusegun Obasanjo and Abdulsalami Abubakar are among those that will draw from the N2.3billion if eventually approved.
Other former Heads of State that will benefit from this fund include Head of Babangida’s Interim National Government, Mr. Ernest Shonekan, Shehu Shagari and immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan.
Past vice presidents like Atiku Abukakar, Namadi Sambo, and Alex Ekwueme, among others.
