Speculations surrounding the status of the lawmaker representing Surulere Federal Constituency I of Lagos State, Femi Gbajabiamila, in the Tenth House of Representatives have been laid to rest.
Rep. Gbajabiamila, who was Speaker in the Ninth House of Representatives, tendered his resignation as a Member of the new Assembly barely twenty-four hours after he subscribed to the oath of office during the inauguration of lawmakers in the Green Chamber on Tuesday.
The resignation letter of the Lagos lawmaker addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over Wednesday’s plenary, was read to the entire House, after which he was escorted out of the Green Chamber by the newly elected Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, and a coterie of lawmakers to a waiting vehicle outside the chambers.

The former Speaker had earlier sponsored the first motion in the Tenth House centered on the need to invite the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to explain the seasonal prediction outlook as released by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on the 2023 flood before his resignation was read on the floor of the house.
He went on to thank members of the House for their support, especially while he held sway as Speaker of the House Representatives described the moment as a milestone in his legislative career. Speaker Abbas thereafter declared Gbajabiamila’s seat vacant as a member of the parliament.
Gbajabiamila who secured a sixth-term mandate to represent Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber in February was on June 2, appointed as Chief of Staff to the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, signaling an end to his 20-year stay in Nigeria’s federal parliament.
To the glory of God, I resigned my membership of the newly Inaugurated 10th House of Representatives today. I had the privilege to move the first motion in the new House which was on the need to prepare to avert the negative effects of the forecast of heavy flooding in some parts… pic.twitter.com/d9MbhuI55g
